Explorers

Explorers is the section that covers members between the ages of 14 to 18 years old. Unlike Beavers, Cubs & Scouts, which are run by Scout Groups, Explorers is part of the district. There are 6 explorer units in Mid Cheshire:

  • Endurance (Sea Scout Unit) – Weaverham
  • Forlorn Hope – Wharton, Winsford
  • Hartford – Hartford, Northwich
  • Malarg – Lostock Gralam, Northwich
  • Martlet – Winnington, Northwich
  • Young Leaders Unit

The explorers programme is highly exciting and there’s always something for everyone. Examples of activities that units regularly do are canoeing, cooking, hiking, swimming, camping, paintballing and first aid. Some annual district events for explorers are:

  • Rounders
  • Overnight Laser Quest
  • Christmas Quiz

Duke of Edinburgh Awards

All our explorer units offer the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme (DofE) as part of their programme. A DofE award is great fun and also looks great on young peoples’ CVs and personal statements for university. Scouting also has the additional benefit of Chief Scouts Platinium & Diamond and Queen Scouts Awards, which follow the DofE awards requirements, with a few additional small requirements. This looks even better and can make young people really stand out from those without the awards.

Explorers also has lots of oppotunities for the expedition, volunteering, physical and skill sections of DofE all to be completed internally in scouting, such as working towards the Cheshire Hike for physical, web design for skill and the Young Leaders scheme for volunteering.

Young Leaders Scheme

The Young Leaders Scheme is an oppotunity available for all members of scouting between the ages of 14 and 18, as well as anyone between these ages needing to complete their volunteering section of a Duke of Edinburgh award, or Queens Guide Award.

This allows young people to volunteer to help out in a Beaver colony, Cub pack or Scout troop. Whilst doing this, support is avialable from the district in the form of advice and training, including First Aid training.

On completion of all 10 training modules (which are all optional, except one), the Young Leaders Belt will be awarded, which will stand out on young peoples’ CVs.
